Víðgelmir
Hallmundarhraun, the biggest
lava area in Borgarfjörður, was formed in a giant eruption
close to Langjökull glacier around the year 930. It covers
over 242 km2 and it consists of some of Iceland's longest and
largest lava caves. Fljótstunga is located in Hallmundarhraun
and in the land of Fljótstunga is Víðgelmir.
Víðgelmir is more
than 1.5 km long. The highest point inside the cave is 15.8 m
and the 16.5 m in width. The cave's volume is 148.000 km3 making
it, by far, the largest cave in Iceland. It has beautiful ice
formations and deeper inside there are hundreds of stalactites
and stalagmites. Viking age jewelery was found there in 1993.
Speleological expert, Björn
Hróarsson, writes in his book Lava caves in Iceland
that Víðgelmir is one of the most remarkable lava caves
on earth.
